Payscroll: Are you a Ruby on Rails developer?
October 31st, 2006 by payscroll
It’s been a while since I last post anything to our development process here, so I thought maybe it might be interesting to do a short discussion on seeking Ruby on Rails developers for your projects. As a lean startup, the first thing that hits you is, you simply cannot afford the luxury to open up a physical location, hire a few fulltime developers, and crunch out code as a team.. (hmmm sounds like that fun too ;)) … perphaps doing pair programming.. and geeking away on your MPBs. Enough said.. This is a luxury. When it comes to the new age startup, we embrace, the following
- International pool of developers (good stuff. you are no longer limited by your location )
- Possible 24 hrs of development in a day ( again you need to go international with this)
- Communication tools ( Skype, IM , all these great communication tools make it real easy to communicate with your team)
- Web2.0 project management tools (Of course how can you forget about the ‘free and easy’ tools that facilitates your project)
So officially, we are now looking to hire a web developer to make the coolest site for salary research. So yesterday, I posted the Job pitch out on 2 job boards that are free. Again, free, is the important key here for the lean startup :). You can access the job postings on these 2 job boards: jobs.rubynow.com and Railsjob.com. Both of them allow you to post your jobs for free without any hassle, no $199 fee on the other techboards that thinks they do offer a better pool candidates. I can sort of believe that, but still I’m not sold.
So here’s what our job pitch is like:
RoR with a startup
We are a startup in the salary research segment that is currently in deep development phrase. If you are comfortable in completing task on a timely manner, communicates constantly with the team, has experience working with huge database record set. You might be the person that we are looking for.
You will be developing features and requirements that we have set out for our alpha launch. Payment is per job. We set the hours we think you need to get the job done per requirements and the compensation is calculated from the hourly compensation.
A little bit about us: We are an early stage startup with the need to engage a Ruby on Rails programmer to make Payscroll the number 1 site for salary research! You will be working with data (over 500,000 records of Salary/Job profiles) and other features that we have planned for the site.
Just a quick background on what we are doing. Payscroll.com is targetting the job search market that are searching for the “How much am I worth?” question. We hope to help our target users and be the place to go to for salary information and research. At most salary information site, you can only get a general breakdown of statistics of various positions within a locale. Payscroll will allow users to see salary information associated with most US companies.
So there has been a rumor around the web that its hard to find ‘good’ people doing Rails, I would say, that’s not entirely true. From the Rubyonrails wiki, you can access quite a list of developers that are available to projects/work, so that is one good spot to start your look. So you
- AvailableForHire – Independent/freelance developers
- DevelopmentFirms – Firms specializing in Ruby on Rails development
- JobPostings – Find work or look for developers
Then you have the free job boards to start posting your jobs. Since just a quick wrapup, over 24hrs, We’ve got over a dozen responses to our job post and all of them are looking pretty good at this stage from their CVs and previous gigs. So finding that RoR developer to work on your project is not really that hard anymore, and I have to agree the talent really really looks better than the pool of developers you would normally see in other cases. In fact, the hard part is how you would choose from such a pool, you almost feel like you would want to hire them all.. They are driven by passion (their love for Ruby & Rails ), they work with the cutting edge and they are believe in being agile and keeping it DRY.
So if you are interested in applying for the position, please send us an email to alfred.toh AT payscroll DOT com with your CV and experiences. And if you already did, hang in there, I promise to get in touch with every single one of the you. I will not leave you playing the guessing game.
